Canary Islands. Geographical Situation.
Located between 27º 38´
and 29º 25´ Latitudes North and 13º 20´ and
18º 10´ Longitudes West of Greenwich, the Canary Islands lie some
2.000 kilometers
off the Spanish Peninsula and about 100 kms west of the African coast,
forming a communications node between Europe, Africa and the
Americas. |

The largest parts of the islands are characterized by stark contrasts in elevation, reaching their peaks towards the islands´ centers, gradually sloping down towards the sea through a network of valleys and ridges. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the lowest of the islands in terms of elevation. There are around 1.553 kilometers of coastline, of which 106,7 are sandy beaches. Of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the one with the largest amount of sandy coastline with 51,6km of beaches. |

The Climate of the Canaries The islands´ subtropical location, the tradewinds and the influence of marine currents soften the contrasts between seasons, as well as between day and nighttime temperatures. This is true especially along the coastlines. It is here that the temperatures range from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius all year long. |

Relative humidity on the islands depends on the altitude as well the orientation of the location at which it is measured. Annual precipitation differs greatly from one island to another, from 660mm in La Palma, the rainiest of the islands, to 140mm in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The mountainous islands of Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria have lower temperatures towards the islands´ centers that lead to snow on their mountain tops in winter.
